Scrittore inglese. Figlio di un diplomatico, dopo Oxford egli stesso divenne rappresentante della corona, partecipando tra l'altro alla Conferenza di Parigi del 1919. Pubblicò le biografie di diversi personaggi, tra cui Tennyson, Byron e Swinburne. Nel 1913 sposò Vita Sackville-West. Politicamente progressista, aderì al Partito Laburista, che rappresentò in parlamento per dieci anni.
