Federico Mayor Zaragoza (Barcelona, 1934) 

Federico Mayor Zaragoza is a biochemist, the President and promoter of the Fundación para una Cultura de Paz (Foundation for a Culture of Peace) and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. For twelve years, he was the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Declared an ‘Illustrious Guest of Quito’ in 1998, his extensive work has been rewarded by other prizes and honors as well, among them: the Medal of the Republic of Egypt (1998); the Peace Prize granted by the Association for the United Nations in Spain; the Khalil Gibran ‘Spirit of Humanity’ Peace Award (April 1999); Simón Peres Peace Award (November 1999); and Portapaz Award (2001).
