Bill Mauldin (1921 - 2003) Born William Henry Mauldin, American cartoonist. In 1940, he created
Willie & Joe, a couple of cartoon soldiers, for the division's newspaper.
It was only the beginning. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 and in 1959, and in
1961 took home The National Cartoonists' Society's Reuben
Award, as Cartoonist of the Year. Mauldin published many books: Up Front (1945), which reprinted dozens of Willie & Joe cartoons,
