Donald Robert Perry Marquis, born in Walnut, Ill., was a poet, artist, newspaper columnist, humorist, cartoonist, playwright and author. He is best remembered for creating the characters "Archy" and "Mehitabel", supposed authors of humorous verse. Don Marquis wrote about 35 books.
