English painter, photographer, printmaker. Hockney was born in Bradford and educated at Bradford Grammar School, Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He was featured in the exhibition Young Contemporaries, that announced the arrival of British Pop Art. In 1963 Hockney visited New York, making contact with Andy Warhol, and was later in California, that inspired him the oil paintings of swimming pools in Los Angeles. He also worked with photography, using small Polaroid snaps or photolab-prints of a single subject to arrange a composite image: he called them "joiners". Perhaps the most popular and versatile British artist of the 20th century.
